I was recently visited by some wonderful AO alumni, and in the midst of all the catching up, laughter, and memories, I found myself reflecting on some old photos we took during our very first Magazine Launch Party … crazy how time flies. That small moment of nostalgia reminded me of a blog I wrote a year ago, one about me and my journey with Asian Outlook. I figure this would be the perfect time to continue that story.
When I first joined AO, I didn’t fully realize what I was stepping into. I was simply looking for a creative outlet, something that didn’t involve drawing, but still allowed me to express myself. I never imagined that what started as a way to explore photography would become such a defining part of my college experience. Slowly, I went from someone behind the camera, to someone fully immersed in the mission statement, working on podcasts, meetings, and soon enough working with my friends to help manage AO.
As I stood at our most recent Magazine Launch Party, it hit me how much everything, and everyone, has grown. I watched the E-Board grow from just 18 to 32 people. Standing there and seeing the work from the E-Board, such as the sculptures, the banners, and the magazine pieces, I was filled with joy. Seeing some members who were once shy and unsure, are now confidently running meetings, designing magazines/postcards, and creating spaces where others feel seen. I was reminded of how meaningful it is to witness growth.
Now that I’m truly in my last year in AO, it’s definitely bittersweet, but I feel at ease knowing that AO is in the hands of such passionate, capable individuals. I’ve witnessed so much growth — not just in the organization, but in each person. I’m proud of the way that each person has found their voice and used it to make something beautiful. It’s been an honor to witness it all, thank you for having me as your advisor this year.
To my wonderful E-Board: if you ever need me, I’m just a phone call away!
