If everyone has a curse, mine is being unable to shut up. Particularly about music.
I’ve been exposed to such a wide range of music my entire life that it honestly started to leave me unsatisfied. I’m constantly looking for new music that makes me … I’m not sure how to describe it. I’m not exactly “picky,” just particular. Good melody, good beat, good lyrics aren’t even required. Frankly, the only qualifications I have are a father obsessed with music and 12 years of piano experience. I like to think I’m a connoisseur, but I currently have the “party at the beach down in Copacabana” Kidz Bop TikTok audio stuck in my brain. What does a song even require to be good in my opinion? I don’t think I could tell you. I don’t think I can quantify it. The songs I love are vastly different and I love them for vastly different reasons. Let me give a few examples:
“Mimosa” — Lucy Bedroque: incredible melody, absolutely banging beat, so much fun to sing
“You Can Do Magic” — America: reminds me of my dad, has a freaking sound effect in it!!, incredible harmonic components
“Get Away” — The Internet: the lead’s voice??????? The melody??? Absolute cinema
“Black Hole Sun” — Soundgarden: THE YEARN, THE PULL TO THE END
Perhaps my synesthesia has a factor in my opinions. The musical tones appear almost colorful to me. “Mimosa” invokes the bright orange of its namesake. “You Can Do Magic” feels like a pale blue or green, almost a white; very magical — at least to me. I don’t know if I will ever determine what exactly makes me love a song, but I know that I love them, and that’s good enough for me.
Finally, play some good music at parties, for the love of Jod. I cannot hear “In the Name of Love” again. No offense to Anderson (who posted the song on his story) but I am TIRED.
